The following statistics were taken from Child Maltreatment 2004 (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2006)

It is estimated that 1,490 children died in 2004 as a result of abuse or neglect. This number may be incorrect. Researchers suggest that as many as 50 to 60 percent of child deaths resulting from abuse or neglect are not recorded.

Who Are the Perpetrators or Abusers?

Although there is no single abuser profile, he or she may be a young adult (mid-20s), living in poverty, stressed, and often the recepient of child abuse themselves.  Most deaths from
physical abuse are caused by male caretakers - fathers, boyfriends, uncles, etc. Deaths due
to child neglect are usually traced back to the mother.
